AC MILAN, Zapata: "I jumped at the chance" Milan’s latest signing, Cristian Zapata, was at the centre of attention at the press conference held to officially unveil him as a Rossoneri player:
The transfer negotiations didn’t take long. As soon as I found out that Milan were interested I jumped at the chance. They are the biggest club in the world and I couldn’t wait to come here to prove I was worth my place in the squad. I know the Italian game well because I’ve played six seasons here. I had some problems in Spain because I played as a right-back, which is not my position. Italy is my home.
I first met Massimiliano Allegri when I was playing for Udinese. He is a very able coach, he has already done and is still doing great things here at Milan.
I know that the best central defenders in the world have left Milan, but I have come here to demonstrate my worth. I am aware I’ll have to work hard every day – something that doesn’t frighten me. I know that if I work hard, I can make it here.
I am a central defender, but if required, I can play full-back, too. However, my natural position is as a central defender. I jumped at the chance to come here because Milan are a great team, always in contention for trophies. This is how my teammates and coach think, too.
I already know Mario Yepes because we are international teammates. I must admit I was curious to get know Antonio Cassano. You can see that Antonio is a bit of a character, and this helps build a positive atmosphere in the dressing room. I chose the number 17 shirt because it was the day my son was born.
